    For King and Country

    Saturday, May 5, 2018 -

    Time: 7:30pm - 9:30pm

Discover how Canadians experienced the First World War, both on the battlefield and at home, in a unique commemoration here at Toronto's historic St. Andrew's Church. For King and Country will feature an engaging mix of live musical performances, dramatic readings, displays of rare photographs and artefacts, and more. The centrepiece of this evening will be the world première of a new song cycle about Canada and the First World War by Tony Quarrington. The Toronto musician-composer and Juno Award-winning producer will perform these songs with his band - a dozen or more top local musicians, including opera singer and Order of Canada recipient, Mary Lou Fallis. Complementing the songs will be a big screen show of wartime photographs and dramatic readings performed by actors Kirk Dunn and Will King, and soprano Allison Angelo.Audience members can also view a rare battlefield relic, the Vimy Cross. This Celtic-style wooden cross was created and raised on the battlefield days after the Canadian army's successful assault on Vimy Ridge in 1917. The Cross was shipped last year to France, where it was on display at Canadian National Vimy Memorial as part of the centenary commemorations. Other rare battlefield artefacts will be on display this evening in the 48th Highlanders Museum. Tours of the on-site museum at St. Andrew's will be available before and after the program. For King and Country is presented by Music at St. Andrew's and the 48th Highlanders of Canada. It’s the third and final presentation in Music at St.Andrew's commemorative trilogy marking key anniversaries of the First and Second World Wars.

Complementing the songs will be a big screen show of wartime photographs and dramatic readings performed by actors Kirk Dunn and Will King, and soprano Allison Angelo. Audience members can also view a rare battlefield relic, the Vimy Cross. It’s the third and final presentation in Music at St. Andrew's commemorative trilogy marking key anniversaries of the First and Second World Wars.
